The bright, hot days of summer are upon us, and what better way to beat the heat than with nature’s bounty: cherries! I think of cherries as half berry and half fruit. While they look like a small fruit, they deliver all the lymph-moving and fatty tissue-cleansing properties that berries do.
Did you know that cherries have been found to be particularly high sources of melatonin, which makes them a great agent for improved sleep? You can read more about the study here.
Another amazing health benefit of cherries is that they are a healthy way to significantly reduce muscle inflammation and soreness (particularly tart cherries).
They have a compound called anthocyanin glycoside (which gives them their dark red color). This compound actually helps combat post-exercise soreness.
You can read more about that study here.
The best time to have cherries would be immediately post workout when you muscles are primed to absorb excess insulin in the bloodstream.
So, get out there and enjoy summer’s bounty of cherries before their growing season comes to an end – they are delicious and packed with health benefits.
Here's a great way to enjoy them for breakfast with my Cherry Almond Overnight Oats recipe.
This is an amazingly satisfying breakfast! Enjoy!
